1. Variety and flavours
There is a sparkling wine to fit every occasion: opt for a crisp Brut for parties, an elegant vintage or Rosé for dinners, and a luxurious, personalised bottle when selecting a gift.
Brut wines are dry and crisp, Extra Brut wines are even drier, Rosé wines tend to be fruity and slightly pink, and Demi-Sec wines are slightly sweeter, making them ideal for pairing with desserts. This difference is the result of the dosage, which is the amount of sugar added after the second fermentation.
Champagne originates from France and is often complex, Prosecco from Italy tends to be fruity and light, while Cava from Spain is fresh and elegant. Crémant is French sparkling wine that is not produced in Champagne, and finally, Sekt is German sparkling wine, which is usually light and aromatic.
Yes, sparkling wine pairs well with seafood, meat and cheese. Fish: dry Champagne or Prosecco with oysters and grilled fish, Rosé with salmon. Meat: Brut or Crémant with chicken and pork, Rosé with red meat. Cheese: Champagne or Crémant with soft cheeses, Prosecco with hard cheeses, Demi-Sec with blue cheeses.
Yes, sparkling wines are excellent for cocktails. They add freshness, bubbles and light fruity notes, for example in a Mimosa, Bellini or French 75. Choose a dry Brut or Prosecco to bring out the flavours of the other ingredients.
2. Preserving and serving
Unopened sparkling wine can generally be stored for one to three years, but the production process largely determines its shelf life. Wines produced according to the Méthode Traditionnelle, such as Champagne, Crémant and many Cavas, usually keep for three to five years because they ferment in the bottle and therefore develop more structure. Prosecco, which is fermented in tanks using the Charmat method, retains its fresh and fruity character best when consumed within one to two years.
A sparkling wine is still drinkable if it has a fresh aroma, sufficient bubbles and does not taste flat or acidic. Always store bottles in a cool, dark place, preferably horizontally, to preserve their quality for as long as possible.
Sparkling wine is ideally served at a temperature between 6 and 8 degrees, so that both its freshness and aromatic nuances are optimally expressed. Preferably, do not choose a narrow flute, but a slightly larger tulip or wine glass, as this significantly promotes the development of bubbles and aromas. Open the bottle gently by holding the cork firmly and turning the bottle slowly, so that the wine can be poured in a controlled manner without losing any bubbles.
