Sparkle of the Month: An Intentional Beginning

For our very first Sparkle of the Month, we are starting slightly unconventionally. The wine we have chosen is not currently available for purchase on our website. This is not an oversight, but a deliberate decision.

Our aim with Sparkle of the Month is to go beyond what is immediately for sale and instead share wines that shape our perspective, refine our standards, and help define what excellence in sparkling wine truly looks like. By offering insight into benchmark producers and cuvées, we hope to give context and inspiration, even when a wine is not yet part of our online assortment.

With that philosophy in mind, January’s selection could not be more fitting.

Ruinart: The Foundations of Champagne Elegance

Founded in 1729, Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house and one of the most influential in shaping the region’s reputation for elegance and finesse. From its historic chalk cellars to its consistent focus on Chardonnay-driven refinement, the house has long been associated with purity, balance, and restraint.

Ruinart’s style is not about excess or power. It is about precision, clarity, and a quiet confidence that comes from centuries of experience. These values are perfectly expressed in its flagship non-vintage Champagne.

R de Ruinart Brut: A Signature of Subtle Distinction

R de Ruinart Brut is the house’s calling card and a distilled expression of its identity. The blend is typically led by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, supported by a small proportion of Pinot Meunier and a significant percentage of reserve wines. This approach brings both freshness and depth, ensuring consistency while adding complexity.

In the glass, the wine is luminous and refined, with a fine and persistent mousse. Aromas lean toward fresh orchard fruit, citrus peel, and delicate notes of almond and brioche. On the palate, the Champagne is harmonious and poised, offering a seamless balance between fruit, freshness, and gentle structure.

What makes R de Ruinart particularly compelling is its restraint. The style is subtle yet immediately recognisable, elegant without feeling distant, and confident without needing to assert itself. It is a Champagne that rewards attention rather than demanding it.

Placing the Style in Context

Within the world of non-vintage Champagne, R de Ruinart sits firmly in the elegant, balanced spectrum. Compared to many commercial or fruit-forward styles, it prioritizes finesse and cohesion over impact.

Those familiar with Pierre Mignon Brut Champagne may notice a shared sense of balance and approachability. Pierre Mignon often shows slightly more overt fruit expression, while R de Ruinart remains more reserved and linear, emphasizing texture and refinement. Both offer quality and precision, but through subtly different stylistic lenses.

Experiencing It With Us

Although R de Ruinart Brut is not currently offered for online purchase through our store, it is regularly featured at our tasting events. There, it serves as a reference point, allowing guests to compare styles, structure, and elegance across a curated selection of sparkling wines.

It is a Champagne we return to often, not only for enjoyment, but for perspective.

Why We Chose It

Beginning our Sparkle of the Month series with R de Ruinart Brut sets a clear tone. It reflects our commitment to thoughtful selection, education, and appreciation of sparkling wine at its highest level.

This is not just about what is available today, but about sharing wines that inspire our choices for tomorrow.
