Tasting notes
La Grande Dame 2012 is a precise and structured Champagne, led by Pinot Noir, which gives the wine its depth and elegance. In the glass, it shows a bright golden color with a fine, persistent mousse.
On the nose, it is complex and refined, offering aromas of citrus zest, white peach, pear, and apple, layered with notes of almond, brioche, and subtle toasted nuances. With aeration, hints of floral notes and light spice emerge.
The palate is silky yet powerful, combining freshness with concentration. Flavours of ripe stone fruit and citrus are balanced by chalky minerality and delicate toasted and nutty notes from extended ageing. The finish is long, precise, and saline, highlighting the wine’s elegance and ageing potential.
Pairs well with
It pairs exceptionally well with lobster, langoustines, or scallops, as well as fine fish dishes such as turbot or sole with light sauces. Its structure also complements poultry with cream or mushroom-based preparations and aged, hard cheeses. For a refined contrast, it works well with Japanese cuisine, including sashimi and tempura.
Producer
Veuve Clicquot, France, Champagne
Veuve Clicquot is one of Champagne’s most influential historic houses, founded in 1772 in Reims. Its identity was decisively shaped by Barbe Nicole Clicquot, whose leadership in the early nineteenth century introduced lasting innovations to Champagne, including the riddling method and the first blended rosé Champagne. Her vision established a clear focus on quality, precision, and consistency that continues to define the house today.
The estate owns one of the largest vineyard holdings in Champagne, with extensive parcels classified as Grand and Premier Cru across the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. Pinot Noir sits at the heart of the Veuve Clicquot style, giving structure and depth to the wines, while Chardonnay and Meunier provide balance and finesse. Long aging in the historic chalk cellars beneath Reims contributes to the house’s signature clarity and refinement. Today, Veuve Clicquot combines this heritage with a modern commitment to sustainability and technical precision, maintaining its position as a benchmark for structured, gastronomic Champagne.
